Summary
This project aims to (1) educate the public about the impacts of light pollution to the environment, through the organization of roadshows in public venues including shopping malls and public spaces, including participation in the annual HK SciFest organized by the Hong Kong Science Museum; (2) promote good lighting practice by piloting an online public directory of good and poor lighting installment in the communities; (3) expand our international knowledge exchange effort through the Globe at Night – Sky Brightness Monitoring Network project which adopt the HKU-developed standardized method of quantifying the extent of light pollution.
Project Objectives
- To engage the public on the adverse environmental impacts of light pollution
- To promote good practice of lighting in Hong Kong in the community
- To promote the light pollution measurement technique developed by HKU and the results from the ongoing HKU’s international light pollution study to the public.

Deliverables
- Organized “Dark Sky Conservation” booth during the Fun Science Carnival of the HK SciFest 2017 on 18 ̶ 19 February 2017 at Lower Piazza, Hong Kong Science Museum with approximately 10,000 attendees.
- Organized "I Love the Night Sky - Star gazing is Fun"on 3 ̶ 4 June 2017 at L1 Atrium, D‧PARK, Tsuen Wan with approximately 2,100 attendees.
- Organized "I Love the Night Sky - Star gazing is Fun” in the evening of 24 June 2017 at the Piazza, Kowloon Park with approximately 500 attendees.
- Featured in Educational Television, EDB program titled “晚上的太陽(光污染)” for General Studies and Science Education produced by the Education Bureau.
- Contributed talk at the “Light Pollution: Theory, Modelling and Measurements Conference” on 27-30 June 2017 at Hotel Terradets, Spain.
- Increased the number of monitoring stations and countries/regions that participated in the Globe at Night - Sky Brightness Monitoring Network by 50% (24 stations in 12 countries/regions).
