Since 2010, HKU has been operating the “Hong Kong Night Sky Brightness Monitoring Network” to keep track of the long-term light pollution situation in Hong Kong. The organizers of this competition also recently launched the “Globe at Night – Sky Brightness Monitoring Network” by setting up a global network for worldwide light pollution monitoring and research. The year 2015 has been named by the United Nation as the “International Year of Light”, and this competition provides an opportunity for secondary school students to be aware of the adverse effects of light pollution and to investigate its behavior. This competition is supported by the HKU Knowledge Exchange fund.

※Everyone is also invited to submit a video shorter than 3 minutes about light pollution to the “Light Pollution Video Competition 2015-16”.
